PMB: Won’t congratulate DA’s Zille

2008-10-29 00:00

Msunduzi Mayor Zanele Hlatshwayo yesterday refused a request by the DA to congratulate Hellen Zille for being chosen as the World’s Best Mayor of 2008.

The DA’s Mark Steele proposed at yesterday’s full council meeting that the council congratulate Zille, saying the award is unique and a first for South Africa, but ANC councillor Mzi Thebolla dismissed the motion as political point-scoring.

DA caucus leader Bill Lambert then suggested that Hlatshwayo send a congratulatory letter to Zille.

Hlatshwayo said congratulations are not the culture of the municipality, otherwise council would have to honour former president Thabo Mbeki publicly for the successes he had made in the past 10 years and similarly recognise the achievements of municipalities.

The mayor said Zille’s municipality has not won local awards, while eThekwini has bagged a number of accolades and Mayor Obed Mlaba has infrequently been congratulated.
