PMB airport: R40 million budgeted for upgrading

2010-11-29 00:00

PIETERMARTIZBURG Airport is to get a R40 million cash injection from the KZN provincial government for essential upgrading.

Presenting her 2010/11 adjustment budget, Finance MEC Ina Cronjé said the proposed development includes upgrading the current runway. A report from the Msunduzi Municipal community services unit to the City’s Executive Committee noted that the Civil Aviation Authority had condemned the runway, saying it urgently needs re-surfacing. Airlink has also indicated that if the upgrade is not carried out, it would be forced to cancel flights to Pietermaritzburg.

Cronjé said the upgrade will also include the building of a parallel taxi way to increase aircraft parking space. She added that the money will only be paid out once work is completed and passes inspection.
