PMB architecture student styles in the ‘Men’s Health Look 2008’

2008-11-07 00:00

Patrick Kasongo, runner-up in the Men’s Health Look 2008, is more than a good-looking guy.

The architecture student proved he also has a zest for life, leadership skills and commitment to health and fitness, career, friends and family in the recent competition to find the person who embodies the ideal Men’s Health man.

Kasongo, who was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo but raised in Pietermaritzburg, said that taking part in the competition was an “experience of a lifetime”, one that has opened many doors for him.

Kasongo, who is completing his in-service training with a Johannesburg architecture firm, said he hopes to be an ambassador to other young people.

“I thought I was dreaming when I heard I was a finalist in the competition. I knew that I was in for a big adventure,” he said.

The outspoken Kasongo, who is also a personal trainer and a model, admits that the action weekend where the 10 finalists had to jump off a Huey helicopter into Cape Town’s icy waters was “gruelling” at times.

Kasongo and his fellow contestants also paraglided and abseiled off Table Mountain and competed in a strongman competition in Clifton.

“As soon as we arrived in Cape Town, we were made to run in and out of freezing water. I realised how much I missed Durban at that stage,” he said.

Flying out to sea in the military plane was also an experience Kasongo won’t forget. The men had to perform stunts while suspended in air. “It was crazy but great fun at the same time. Driving the Formula cars was also great. It gave me such an adrenaline rush,” he said.

Catch Kasongo and other contestants on a three-part television series on M-Net after the evening movie on Saturdays, December 6, 13 and 20.
