PMB bodybuilder wins champs

HARD work and perseverance have paid off for a plucky Pietermaritzburg fireman.

Kiran Singh (28) took first place in the disabled division of the INBA Bodybuilding Championship in Randburg recently.

Singh lost his leg in a horrific hit-and-run accident on Field’s Hill two years ago. He was riding his motorbike when he was struck by a car that sped away, leaving him on the road in a pool of blood. Due to the severity of the injury, his leg had to be amputated above the knee. At the time, members of the public came together along with local organisations to raise funds for his prosthetics.

Since the incident, he has been training vigorously at a local gym, without letting his prosthetic leg get in the way of his passion. He said the past two years have been a “terrible struggle” because living and working with a prosthesis is difficult, but bodybuilding has kept him sane in that time.

“I have found a higher calling after my experience. I believe that God brought me back for a reason and that reason is to inspire others,” Singh said.

Due to his placement in the competition last month, he has been chosen to represent South Africa on an international stage at the 17th annual Natural Olympia in San Diego, California, in November later this year.

“Winning the INBA championship was a surreal experience. I’m looking forward to representing my country and doing my community proud. All I can say to other aspiring athletes is that you should never give up. Dreams are real if you want them to be,” he said.
