PMB-born street artist commissioned by Sprite for graffiti project

FOR eight years, Anthony Kirkwood — known as Gasak — has been creating street art to express his thoughts, and the world has begun to notice.

Kirkwood, who was born and bred in Pietermaritzburg, was contacted by The Fader, a New York-based magazine, to get involved in a graffiti project organised by Sprite cool drink.

He was chosen to be one of five street artists from around the world to tag different landmark buildings in South Africa.

“When Fader first contacted me, I thought about doing a building in Jo’burg or Durban. I eventually chose Pietermaritzburg, because this is where Gasak started, my art’s history is here,” Kirkwood told The Witness.

He chose to tag the wall of Tiger Tiger nightclub in Chief Albert Luthuli Street as it is the busiest street in the city. This way it would be seen widely and inspire the many people who pass it.

Kirkwood and the other street artists were filmed while creating their pieces for a documentary to be aired in the United States.

Kirkwood is currently focusing on his Face the Peace project that aims to fight against criminal organisations, particularly in the drug industry, through art.

“Face the Peace is really important. It is a follow up on a project I did in 2011 where I went to live in KwaMashu, the most crime-ridden place in the country at the time, to get a sense of the people and break down barriers through my work.”
