PMB bucks crime trend

2010-09-10 00:00

IN contrast to the national crime statistics released yesterday, which show a decrease in serious crimes, there has been a rise in many crimes committed in Pietermaritzburg.

Major police stations around the city have altogether investigated 994 murder and sexual assault cases, compared to the previous year’s 778 cases. The major police stations are Plessislaer, Alexandra, Pietermaritzburg Central, Town Hill, Hilton and Mountain Rise.

Plessislaer police station, which serves previously disadvantaged areas such as Edendale, Ashdown and Imbali, is leading with 573 rapes and murders.

Mountain Rise police station comes second with 174, followed by Pietermaritzburg Central, which has 119.

Affluent areas such as Hilton and Town Hill both recorded only 15 rapes and no murders.

Sexual assault now includes rape of men and pornography.

Plessislaer is the only station that saw more murders in the 2009/10 period. In the previous year it logged 133 murders, while this year it had 138. Attempted murders have increased from 61 to 79, while assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm increased from 604 to 728 at the same police station.

Common assault cases have also increased around the city.

Plessislaer saw 1 420 cases this year, compared to 1 258 last year. Alexandra went from last year’s 202 to 304 cases, while such cases at Mountain Rise increased from 246 to 526 this year.

In Hilton and Town Hill the number of cases remained the same or has dropped.

Vehicle hijackings increased in the city centre and Mountain Rise from 10 to 15 and 18 to 19 respectively. They have dropped from 43 to 28 in Plessislaer, from 29 to 16 in Alexandra and from one to none in Hilton. Motorists in Town Hill have not experienced such crimes since last year.

Residential and business robberies, which are also violent crimes, have almost doubled from 65 to 110 in Plessislaer and increased from 59 to 75 in Alexandra and from 36 to 53 in Mountain Rise. Other police stations have either experienced parity or a decrease.

Residents in suburban areas suffered fewer instances of housebreaking: such crimes dropped in Town Hill from 140 to 82 and in Hilton from 155 to 117. But at Alexandra police station, 556 cases were reported this year compared to 520 last year.

In Plessislaer, the city centre and Mountain Rise, an increase in all housebreaking crimes was recorded from last year’s 1 057 to 1 316 this year, Plessislaer topped them all with 848 current cases.
