PMB community radio goes live on air

2010-10-14 00:00

THE city has its own radio station again. From today, Pietermaritzburg residents can tune into Umgungundlovu Community Radio Station (UCRFM), which went live yesterday afternoon.

The station, at Tembaletu Community Education Centre in Burger Street, was granted a broadcasting licence by the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) in 2008, and had been waiting for contractors to finalise frequency connections at World’s View.

The station will operate 24 hours a day with a breakfast show kicking off at 6.30 am.

It will focus on current affairs, health, HIV and Aids, children and youth, crime prevention, functions of government, community announcements, phone-in requests and dedications, religious programmes, environmental issues and entrepreneurship among many other topics.

Radio station manager Muzi Sibiya told The Witness: “We promise to bring to the attention of residents issues that directly affect them.

“Together with them, we will develop programmes that will cater for their needs and taste as everyone will be allowed to participate.”

With the pay-off line, “It is the sound of KZN’s capital”, the station will be an instrument for socio-economic and cultural development.

Listeners can tune into the station on 107.6 FM.
