PMB crime: man in ICU after robbery attack

2008-12-09 00:00

THE owner of a small business was severely assaulted before being robbed of R20 000 at gunpoint on Monday afternoon.

By yesterday afternoon, Sanjeev Singh (37), who sells sand and blocks in the Plessislaer area near Edendale, was still battling for his life in Medi-Clinic Hospital’s intensive care unit.

Singh sustained a severe head injury when one of his three armed attackers hit him with the butt of a firearm.

His wife, Anashnie, said the criminals, who had already robbed him of money and other valuables, left him bleeding. Paramedics arrived more than 20 minutes later.

Anashnie said her husband was also shot at, but the bullet just missed him.

“He lost a lot of blood while lying there waiting for an ambulance.

“About 20 minutes later the ambulance had not arrived and a kind motorist took him to the hospital,” said Anashnie, who spoke to The Witness by phone from her husband’s bedside.

Anashnie said three men walked into Singh’s business premises next to Msunduzi Blocks at about 4 pm. An unarmed security guard at Msunduzi Blocks watched helplessly as the incident unfolded.

“They held up his two employees while demanding that he empty his pockets. They took his wallet, which had R10 000 cash and cards. They also took another R10 000, which was in his pocket, a cellphone and his van’s key, but they left the van behind,” said Anashnie.

Singh is the father of two children. He had been running the small business in the area for the past five years.

Jeevan has appealed to anyone with information about the incident to contact Detective Captain Idris Adam at 033 398 9771 or 082 443 2148, or Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
