PMB gets ‘lazy staff’ to finally open pools

2012-10-05 00:00

AS summer makes its sweltering presence felt, some of Msunduzi’s municipal swimming pools are finally being opened a month past the date they should have been opened.

The pools are supposed to open on September 1, but that has often not occurred.

Chairperson of the portfolio committee on community services, Inderjit Manillal, blamed lazy staff members who have not been doing their job. “On Tuesday we had our committee meeting and decided to put pressure on them to open the pools,” he said.

Manillal said they are also planning to open the pools throughout the year by ring-fencing the monies collected and obtaining other funding so the pools can be heated swimming pools during the cold season.

“This will also ensure that we are able to constantly maintain them because during off-season times they deteriorate and we are forced to pour a lot of money into maintenance,” he said.

Manillal said they are also looking at a long- term vision to establish swimming pools in the Edendale and Vulundlela areas for swimming development in the city.

Msunduzi Municipality spokesperson Brian Zuma said Alexandra pool was opened for public use on Wednesday and over 200 people made use of it.

The Buchanan pool was never closed and is open for public use. “Eastwood and Woodlands swimming pools will be fully operational with cashiers and life guards as from [today],” Zuma said.

He added the Olympic pool in Northdale will be up and running by the weekend, but the Sobantu pool needs a bit more attention and will be opened by late next week.

He said the Berg Street pool has been seriously vandalised and there were budgetary considerations to revamp the pool.
