PMB man’s marriage proposal takes romance to a new high

2011-08-27 00:00

A PIETERMARITZBURG man pulled out all the stops as he planned the perfect marriage proposal for his girlfriend of nine years at the Moses Mabhida Stadium yesterday.

Jonathan Michael (30) chose the SkyCar as the perfect spot to propose to Marina Govender (27).

Speaking to Weekend Witness after the proposal, Michael said it took him three months to plan it while keeping his girlfriend in the dark — and he was almost caught out a number of times.

With the help of Moses Mabhida staff he managed to execute an original and a perfect proposal.

He convinced the staff at the stadium to allow him a private ride with his girlfriend on the SkyCar, and underneath they had laid a 22-metre banner that he made himself, reading “Marina will you marry me?”

Michael said, “I had toyed with several ideas of how I would do this as I needed something that would be original. I decided on the Moses Mabhida because it was a prime location and something like this had never been done there before.

“I thought of using the big screen at the stadium with the words and I realised that you cannot see the big screen from the SkyCar, so I decided to use the banner.

“As the car was going up I made her look the other way as she looked down. I was on my knees and I asked her to marry me in the SkyCar and she said yes.”

Michael, an entrepreneur, said it was important for him to plan the perfect proposal: he believes that a person should marry once, and therefore should propose only once.

He said that without the help of the Moses Mabhida staff it would not have been possible.

“Moses Mabhida is a top tourist destination and for them to do something like this for me was totally amazing,” he said.

An ecstatic Govender said she was taken by surprise by the proposal and the scale of the proposal.

“I had not expected this. I now have to think of something even bigger to top this,” she said. — WR.
