PMB princess a teen of many talents

WHEN she won her first beauty contest, which was held in a garage, little did she know that she was destined for greater things on the catwalk.

Lucky Mthembu (18), a grade 12 pupil at Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High, was last month crowned first princess in the Miss SA Teen contest. She is the main model for the Echo newspaper advert on a billboard in Edendale Road.

Speaking to The Witness about her rise to stardom, she said: “I was crowned Miss Young Angel when I was just eight years old … I joined a modelling agency when I was in grade 5 and thereafter I stopped modelling and only started again last year.”

Lucky, who is with Irene’s Modelling Agency, says she is grateful to her friend, Zanele Maphanga, her supportive family and her agency as it is through them that she gained the confidence to enter Miss SA Teen.

She is also an aspiring hip-hop and gospel singer, a talented flautist and actress. She is a school prefect and plays for the school’s second netball team. She lives with her parents and younger brother.

Asked whether she will consider modelling as a career, Lucky said: “It is a very unpredictable career and it is important to have something to fall back on and that is why I intend enrolling for a B.Tech in town and regional planning after I finish matric.”

During her reign, Lucky hopes to work with pre-teens because she believes that is the time when many of them start to misbehave and when they need someone to teach them morals and values.
