NO fewer than seven products of Maritzburg College coach Mike Bechet’s recent first teams have been included in the 24-player South Africa U21 Junior World Cup training squad, which also has three Maritzburg Varsity players.

The current Epworth captain is in the women’s squad.

Pietermaritzburg and the Midlands remain a fertile nursery for the country’s national teams, and current senior national player, midfielder Clint Panther, a Michaelhouse product, brings to eight the number of PMB-raised players in the 24-player squad

A recent PMB Girls’ High School player, Hlubi Sipamla, is in the women’s squad, which has as its manager the Voortrekker director of sport, Charmaine Koekemoer, as well as current Epworth captain, the highly regarded midfielder, Heather McEwan.

Goalkeeper Rene de la Peyre, defenders Matthew Guise-Brown, Brad Logan and Nick Berichon, midfielder Marc Fourie and strikers Andrew Manson and Grant Glutz are the seven College Old Boys.

The PMB Varsity players in the squad are Robin Jones, Lloyd de Kock and Chad Cairncross, bringing to almost half the number of PMB-linked players in the SA U21 Junior World Cup men’s squad. The coach is former PMB Varsity player/coach, KZN Inland captain and Beijing 2008 Olympian, Darryn Gallagher.
