PMB restaurateur sends a message with his bottled water

2012-11-23 00:00

“DRINKING this tap water is one of the safest things you can do in Pietermaritzburg.”

This is according to the label on glass water bottles used at Pizzology, a pizza restaurant in Winston Road.

Owner Geoff Tennant is no eco-warrior, but has made great efforts to show his customers that there is really “nothing special” about bottled water.

The bottle also has “plain unfiltered tap” written at the top with a Blue Drop logo printed below the word “Msunduzi”.

Msunduzi Municipality was awarded Blue Drop status by the national Department of Water Affairs last year. The award is given to municipalities that excel in providing safe, clean drinking water.

Tennant takes water straight from the tap and creatively bottles it.

The water is then served to customers free of charge.

“I’ve never really liked bottled water. I don’t get the fuss,” Tennant said.

He said he read an article a while back about the Blue Drop status and came up with the concept, with the help of a designer, of bottling tap water for his customers.

He decided to put a humorous spin on things by adding a positive “warning” label, which his customers have found quite amusing.

“People have asked to buy the bottles. They want to take them home and keep them in their fridges. But they are not for sale.”

Customer Yvonne Spain was very impressed.

She told The Witness: “Geoff’s innovative approach made me happy as I am so fed up with the preciousness of bottled water drinkers (especially as preferred by politicians), its environmental cost and its plastic flotsam wherever I look,” Spain said.

Tennant made it clear that he is not on a crusade to get people to stop drinking bottled water, but he feels it is rather unnecessary considering that PMB water is very healthy.
