A TEENAGER believed to be from Pietermaritzburg was hospitalised following a near-drowning in the sea at Blue Lagoon yesterday morning.

Sea Rescue spokesman Craig Lambinon said at about 7.40 am a Vodacom Netcare 911 Surf Rescue helicopter was dispatched to the Blue Lagoon and its crew stabilised a 15-year-old boy believed to be from Pietermaritzburg and who displayed near drowning symptoms.

“He had been rescued from the surf by his friends after getting into unknown difficulties while swimming in the sea at the Blue Lagoon which is a prohibited swimming area due to dangerous surf conditions that prevail in the area. He was taken to hospital in a stable condition by a Netcare 911 ambulance,” said Lambion.

Nationl Sea Rescue Institute Durban Station Commander, Paul Bevis urged bathers to go to beaches with lifeguards.

“The NSRI is appealing to bathers and boaters to exercise extreme caution in and around the sea, inland waters and swimming pools. In a sea rescue emergency call 082911.”

Meanwhile, in Richard’s Bay a Lighthouse National Ports Authority 7,7 m rigid inflatable rubber-duck capsized in surf at 5 Mile Beach with four men on-board while recovering a buoy. Lambinon said they responded and all four were found safely on the beach.

Lifesaving SA has meanwhile formalised a 24-hour Surf Rescue unit in response. For aquatic emergencies in the eThekwini area you can call 031 361 0000.
