PMB to become a hive of World Cup activity with a street carnival,

2010-06-05 00:00

WITH the Paraguayan La Albirrojas (White and Reds) settled into their base camp in the midlands, Pietermaritzburg has become a hive of World Cup activity, starting with a carnival today.

This is a collaborative effort between the Arts and Culture Department, the National Lottery Distribution Fund, Ithunga Development, uMgungundlovu District Municipality and KZN Youth Designers.

It will start from Woodburn Stadium and proceed to Harry Gwala Stadium. After the carnival, fans will be treated to a football game between an uMgungundlovu District XI and a Paraguay Under 20 national side at Harry Gwala Stadium.

Before the Bafana Bafana vs Denmark match, which will be screened live at the stadium, uMgungundlovu Mayor Yusuf Bhamjee will give the main address to officially welcome the Albirroja team to the district.

Last night, the KwaZulu-Natal government officially welcomed Team Paraguay with a gala dinner to wish the South American visitors the best of KwaZulu-Natal hospitality and a happy stay at Woodridge Country Hotel, which will be their base camp for the duration of the 2010 World Cup.

The carnival will feature bikers, rickshaws, multicultural music groups, deejays and well-known artists. The event is expected to attract large numbers.

Other activities lined up include football matches, traditional music, multi-cultural song and dance, learning about national symbols and the use of the national flag, learning the lyrics of the national anthem, and the Diski Dance.

The weekend promises to be filled with excitement for football fans. Tomorrow will see the Premier’s XI play against a Paraguay Media XI, followed by a training match between Team Paraguay and their Under-20s.

This is where the La Albirroja will be sharpening their skills ahead of their tough opening Group F encounter against the defending World Champions Italy on June 14 in Cape Town.

Other Group F teams are New Zealand and Slovakia.
