PMB women brave up for ‘X Factor’

2014-06-30 00:00

HUNDREDS of performers braved the gloomy weather in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday to audition for The X Factor, South Africa’s newest reality show, at the Royal Showgrounds.

Executive producer Kee-Lin Irvine said: “In terms of the different regions we had a great turnout yesterday [Saturday], especially as we had the Durban auditions just a couple of weeks ago.

“We had a few hundred people, both groups and solo acts ... and we are getting a lot more women than men entering, so that’s interesting.”

Irvine said that some of the wannabes had travelled from East London and Queenstown in the Eastern Cape to audition for the show’s producers. Others travelled from Kokstad and some of those turned away in Durban came through to try their luck again. “We had some really nice talent ... some gems,” she said.

The Pietermaritzburg auditions complete the regional phase of the singing contest.

For those lucky enough to impress the producers, the next step will be to perform in front of the show’s judges at the end of July. The judges’ auditions will be recorded as live and then broadcast when the show, which will be hosted by Andile Ncube, airs on SABC1 from September 6.

The X Factor is one of world’s biggest and most successful singing competitions. Created by media mogul Simon Cowell, it was a launching pad for both Leona Lewis and One Direction. For the South African winner a recording contract with Sony Music and R300 000 prize money awaits at the grand finale in Durban on December 13.
