PMB’s Lee crowned No. 1 at champs

2012-05-04 00:00

PIETERMARITZBURG’S Julie Lee won the women’s crown at the prestigious South African 2012 National Youth Squash Championships played at the Western Province Cricket Club in Newlands, Cape Town at the weekend.

The competition is the climax of the junior squash year and crowns the U19 South African squash champions for 2012.

In the women’s U19 final, Lee overwhelmed Cape junior Springbok, Alexandra Fuller (11-2, 11-6, 11-2) for the crown.

The national U19 boys squash crown was won by Capetonian, Luke Willemse. Willemse’s gamble to pull out of a provincial tournament a week earlier in order to rest for the nationals nearly came unstuck when he was two games down. However, he fought back to eventually beat Ruan Olivier from Bloemfontein (3-2) in a nail-biting final. Nell van der Merwe (Pretoria) came third, beating Pietermaritzburg’s Maritzburg College prefect and matric student, Daniel Smith, who took fourth spot.

Lee’s crowning is the culmination of many years of hard work.

A member of the SA Schools’ Squash Squad, Lee has played in Malaysia (2009) and competed at the World Junior Squash Championships in Boston (2011).

Her win is also an important boost for the squash programme at Epworth High School, which is managed by ex-South African squash player and top coach, Sally White.
