PSL: Maritzburg United keeper in race against time to be fit for crucial clash against Wits

INJURED goalkeeper Tashreeq Goldman is in a fight against time to be fit for Maritzburg United’s crucial home Premier Soccer League game against Wits University at Woodburn Stadium on Saturday.

Goldman, who has a groin strain is, according to coach Gordon Igesund, “having treatment to a pulled muscle in his leg and having a scan tomorrow [today], and there seems to be a very, very strong possibility that he will be ready for the Wits game.”

Goldman pulled up with a strain in United’s final training session on Friday for their PSL game against Lamontville Golden Arrows on Saturday, and to say the young goalkeeper’s presence was missed would be an understatement. Hunter Gilstrap, coming in for Goldman after a prolonged absence, had a nightmare in a 5-2 defeat, and United have called the American, who showed a finger to the crowd, into a disciplinary committee meeting to be held tomorrow.

Igesund said United had a light training session on Sunday, where he had a “good chat with the players”.

“A lot of the players were very disappointed and very annoyed with themselves. But I have always said that we work together and we lose together, and we lose as a team, so it is everyone’s responsibility including the coaching staff. But the players were quite annoyed and today [yesterday] we had a good training session and the team was full of spirit and working very hard.

“We know exactly what we have to do — there’s eight games left and that’s a whole 24 points to play for. We have got five games at Woodburn Stadium and we have to go out and try to win each one of them to be sure we are safe from relegation.”
