PSL: all matches to be put on hold for Afcon 2012

2011-10-24 00:00

JOHANNESBURG — The executive committee of the Premier Soccer League have decided to observe the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations, and all domestic football will be put on hold for the duration of the tournament.

Exco made the announcement following a meeting with Dr Irvin Khoza at which the PSL chairman was mandated to begin the process of finding a suitable long-term replacement for PSL chief executive Zola Majavu, who resigned this week. Chief operations officer Cambridge Mokanyane will temporarily fill the role, although Khoza said he has ruled himself out of taking up the position full-time.

The African showpiece gets under way on January 12 next year, with the final set to be contested on February 12. It will be co-hosted by Gabon and Equatorial Guinea

“We took this decision in order to give the Africa Cup of Nations the respect it deserves and to ensure that there will be no counter attraction during the continental showpiece,” Khoza told the PSL’s official website. “Clubs are advised that there should be no organised events during the tournament except training matches. This break will enable players to recuperate following what has been a very congested fixture.”

Exco has also sent a request to the South African Football Association for an urgent joint liaison committee meeting to discuss the upcoming Under-23 2012 Olympics qualifying tournament in Morocco and the U20 Cosafa Championships.
