PSL: former Wits FC boss named manager

2010-11-04 00:00

FORMER Wits University FC chief executive Derek Blanckensee was named the new general manager of the Premier Soccer League on Tuesday.

Blanckensee takes over from Ace Ncobo, who resigned late last year.

The 54-year-old Blanckensee comes to the PSL with a wealth of experience after spending 10 years at Wits where he started out as general manager in 1998, before taking over as CEO in 2006.

Blanckensee was the chief competitions officer of 2010 World Cup local organising committee, a position he held from 2008 until October this year.

“Having successfully completed my work as part of the World Cup organising committee, I’ve been eager to get started on a new football project, and working at the PSL is the ideal opportunity,” he said.

“I have learnt a tremendous amount from working closely with Fifa for the last two years and I look forward to ploughing as much of that knowledge as possible back into local football,” Blanckensee added.

PSL CEO Kjetil Siem welcomed Blanckensee into the PSL family. “I’m delighted that we have managed to secure a person of Derek’s calibre,” commented Siem.

“He comes with loads of experience and knowledge and I believe he will … add value to the league. I would like to see Derek fine-tune PSL match operations in line with Fifa standards.”
