Paddlers in full training for Fish

2011-09-17 00:00

WITH less than a month to go to the SA K2 River Championships on the Hansa Fish River Marathon in Cradock, paddlers are in full training with no less than five events set for this weekend.

The action started at 4 pm yesterday with the Midmar Nite race. This 16 km flat-water race provides great preparation for the day one start of Fish on the notoriously windy Grassridge Dam.

Today, in Richards Bay Zululand Kayak Club hosts the RBM SA Surfski Championships. The race is a 23 km downwind between Nhlabane and Alkantstrand and starts at 10 am.

Back inland today, Kearsney College are hosts at Shongweni Dam for the next leg of the Capital Caterers/Popes Canoe Centre Interschools Challenge. This is a 12 km flat water race on the recent SA Marathon course at the dam.

There will also be a short course Guppy and Beginners race for those U12 or not so experienced starting shortly after the main race.

Tomorrow morning marathon hopefuls will be gathering at the ever-popular Albert Falls picnic site for Fezella Canoe Club’s annual Supa Quick Jock Claasens race down to the Old Mill just above the Bayne’s Drift Bridge.
