Pakistan openers in big third Test effort

2009-12-14 00:00

NAPIER — Pakistan were 128 without loss at stumps on the third day of the third test against New Zealand in Napier yesterday, trailing by 120 runs.

Facing a massive first innings deficit of 248 when they started their innings before tea, a determined effort from the Pakistan opening pair halved that lead by the time stumps were called.

Salman Butt (66) and Imran Farhat (55) will endeavour to level the scores this morning before starting to set the target in this deciding encounter.

Earlier, the hosts, resuming on 346/6, were dismissed for 471 — mostly due to Danish Kaneria, who, with a bit more assistance from the increasingly flattening pitch, bagged 7/168.

Daniel Vettori finished on 134 and Daryl Tuffey unbeaten on 80. The New Zealand skipper played cuts and drives without risk, and it needed a stunning fielding effort to dismiss him.

Tuffey, on reaching his maiden test half-century, produced a shot of pure class, driving Kaneria to the long-on boundary.

After Vettori’s departure, Tim Southee stayed long enough to help Tuffey add another 62 runs before Kaneria mopped up the tail.
