Pakistani couple arrested

THE Pakistani couple who are alleged to have abducted a baby after slashing his nanny’s throat were arrested in the Johannesburg CBD yesterday.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said the baby is healthy and unharmed.

The couple, who rented rooms in a house in Bezuidenhouts Valley, snatched the owners’ six-month-old child, Revelation Somfechukwu Kuhlula Jones, while the parents were out on Monday.

The child’s nanny is in a serious condition in hospital.

The couple have three children and are expecting another, said Dlamini.

“The husband sent an SMS to the baby’s father on Wednesday saying he wanted R100 000 before he would give the baby back,” said Dlamini.

They face charges of abduction and attempted murder and will appear in court today.

According to a report in the Star yesterday, the father, Ifeanyi Jones, pleaded with the couple to return his child.

“Please bring my son back. You say you are Christian, and this baby has done nothing to you.”

Jones claimed the couple had tried to poison their food.

“I think now that their motive was to come and do harm,” Jones added.
