Palframan, Meyer to represent SA

2011-04-15 00:00

JUSTINE Palframan and Simone Meyer are Kwa-Zulu Natal’s only representatives in a large team of 56 athletes who have been selected to represent South Africa at the African Junior Championships in Gaborone from May 12.

Palframan earned a silver in the 400 metres last Sunday to add to her silver at the junior championships in Germiston and is currently ranked seventh on the world list.

The 17-year-old is a class athlete who has already gone sub-53 seconds at the region VI meeting in Manzini, Swaziland in December.

Meyer took bronze in the discus at the senior championships behind the province’s only gold medal from Veronica Abrahamse.

In total 27 junior women and 29 junior men have been selected to represent South Africa, and local clubs are sure to be questioning why in KZN, with such a large population and with so much spent on development and track and field, the provincial powers have only been able to develop two athletes to this level.

Other top performers include Wade van Niekerk, whose 20,57-second winning 200 m time at the Yellow Pages SA Senior Championships sees him as the fastest half-lapper in the world. Mpho Maputha’s eight-metre leap at the Yellow Pages Junior Championships is also a world-topping performance, while Samantha Pretorius (6,44 m) and Roelf Pienaar (7,87 m) are both ranked second in the world.
