Palmer plays down Premier’s Cup

2011-07-30 00:00

WHILE the focus of football fans in most parts of the country will be on today’s Carling Black Label Cup between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, Maritzburg United fans will be interested in what happens at the King Goodwill Zwelithini stadium in Umlazi tomorrow.

United, along with KwaZulu-Natal’s three other top football clubs, will be competing in the first-ever Premier’s Cup – a one-day footballing spectacle that will see two semi-finals and then a final take place.

The early semi-final (9 am) will see National First Division club Thanda Royal Zulu take on Amazulu FC.

Maritzburg will then take on Golden Arrows, who are managed by former Team of Choice boss Ernst Middendorp, at noon.

The winners of these two matches will then meet in a 4 pm final.

There is no prize money available for the winning team, though all four competing clubs will be granted a R300 000 appearance fee.

The tournament has been created by the KZN Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture and is being viewed as the government’s way of supporting football in the province.

United coach Ian Palmer spoke earlier in the week about the importance of the tournament for his pre-season preparations, but emphasised that tomorrow’s results will not be a priority.

“We are still in pre-season,” Palmer said. “Sunday [tomorrow] will give some of our younger players the opportunity to play in front of a crowd. That, and match fitness, is our priority.”

The matches will not be televised and entrance into the stadium is free.
