Pampas clash: Five boks in Sharks XV line-up

2012-04-27 00:00

There are five Springboks in the Sharks XV squad which will take on the Pampas XV in tomorrow’s final pool match of the Vodacom Cup in Stellenbosch.

Wing Odwa Ndungane, centre Marius Joubert, prop Beast Mtawarira and flank Jean Deysel are in the starting line-up, while number eight Ryan Kankowski is on the bench.

Two other Sevens Springboks, Paul Jordaan and S’bura Sithole, are also included and coach Sean Everitt has nine players in the squad who have seen Super Rugby action this year.

Ndungane, Mtawarira and Kankowski are returning from injury — and hope to play their way back into the Super Rugby squad to face the Highlanders in Durban next weekend — while Deysel, who toured Australia and New Zealand with the Sharks, is still short of match practice.

The game against the Pampas XV is a vital one with the Sharks determined to finish second in their section to secure home ground advantage for the play-offs.

The Argentinians won this competition last season, but they are not having the same impact this year and are one position below the Sharks XV.

Everitt said they remained a threat.

“They have a lot of physicality upfront and speed amongst the backs and our defence needs to be better than it has been.” He added that if they could use players like Beast to dominate Pampas upfront there should be no problems on the scoreboard.

“Home ground advantage for the quarter-finals is vital, so we need to win to finish second,” he said.
