Paramedics’ plea to motorists after chain reaction on the N2

2012-10-29 00:00

A CHAIN reaction accident on the N2 near the Umgeni Road off-ramp put 10 people in hospital and left nine emergency vehicles badly damaged.

A truck slammed into four ambulances that had responded to a single-vehicle accident on the road at 4 am on Saturday morning, ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson told The Witness.

More ambulances and the fire department arrived at the scene, and a while later, a 4x4 smashed into the back of a car that was slowing down and pushed it into a tow truck and yet another emergency vehicle.

In a statement, Netcare 911’s Chris Botha said: “The wreckage of the errant party came to rest a hundred metres down the road with three people still in the crumpled remains.”

The drivers of the truck and the 4x4 were later questioned by the police.

“As paramedics and emergency workers who put our lives at risk every day to save those that are injured, we plead with the public to please slow down on the roads, especially when you have to navigate your way around accident scenes,” said Botha.
