Parents urged to get children vaccinated for polio

2014-09-02 00:00

THE KZN Health Department has appealed to all whose children have not yet received polio immunisations to come forward and get their child vaccinated.

Earlier this year, South Africa experienced a country-wide shortage of the oral polio vaccine. The country has now replenished its stocks and has been running a catch-up immunisation drive at hospitals, clinics and crèches. Parents and legal guardians are urged to bring forward all children who have never been immunised as well as those who have missed their doses of immunisation. The Health Department emphasised that even those who stopped taking their children for immunisation because they have lost their Road to Health booklet must come forward. “Our emphasis here is the fact that immunising of children is crucial in the prevention of childhood diseases and creation of life-long immunity,” said KZN Health MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo.

“We are indeed ready for the catch-up phase as we will be utilising our community care givers to assist and also to trace mothers and babies that missed out earlier,” Dhlomo said.
