Parents want Oscar to pay

2014-01-22 00:00

REEVA Steenkamp’s parents are at present in “very sensitive negotiations” with the Pistorius family, seeking compensation for the death of their daughter.

Blade runner Oscar Pistorius shot and killed Reeva, his girlfriend, on Valentine’s Day 2013, saying he thought she was an intruder.

Advocate Dup de Bruyn, for June and Barry Steenkamp, said the negotiations were at a very sensitive stage and did not want to comment for fear of scuppering the talks.

De Bruyn, who also represented Fred van der Vyver in the Inge Lotz case, did not want to disclose the amount being negotiated.

Earlier reports indicated that the amount could be in the region of between R2 million and R3 million.

The Steenkamp couple had said Reeva, a successful model up until her death, had supported them both financially.

After her death the couple found they could no longer afford the rental of their home in Seaview in Port Elizabeth.

Barry is a retired jockey trainer and June was in the process of planning a restaurant partnership shortly before Reeva died.

Pistorius will appear in the Pretoria high court, with Judge Thokozile Matilda Masipa presiding, on March 3 to 20, on charges of murder and three transgressions of the Firearms Control Act.

Although Pistorius claimed Reeva’s death was an accident, the state intends proving he had planned to murder her.
