Parkin: Chosen as Sportsman of 2009

TERENCE Parkin of South Africa and Aksana Petrushenka of Belarus have been selected as the 2009 WIDEX Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year, by the members of the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf Selections Commission, through an electronic ballot.

Parkin (28) won seven gold medals at the recent Summer Deaflympics in Taipei in the swimming events, and a bronze medal in the cycling event.

Furthermore, Terence has broken 12 World records in the year of 2009 and there are a few more applications for world record recognition from his recent swimming competition in Singapore at the Fina Swimming World Cup.

His Taipei accomplishments include:

•50m Breaststroke – Gold Medal 29.58

•200 m Breaststroke Gold Medal and Deaf Games record 2:16.32

•400 m Individual Medley Gold Medal and Deaf Games record 4:29.56

•200 m Freestyle Gold Medal and World record 1:53.12

•100 m Breaststroke Gold Medal and Deaf Games record 1:03.51

•200 m Individual Medley Gold Medal and Deaf Games record 2:06.24

•1 500 m Freestyle Gold Medal and World record 16:08.56

•In the cycling event 93,12 km road race 2:17.41 bronze medal

Parkin will be competing at the Kwazulu-Natal Swimming Championships that get under way this evening, at 5.30 pm, when he tackles the 1 500m freestyle alongside fellow Seals swimmer Troyden Prinsloo.

Joining Parkin from tomorrow will be team-mates and recent World Record breaker Darian Townsend and South African 200m breaststroke record holder Neil Versfeld.
