Partnering to honour Mandela

2014-07-17 00:00

TENANTS at the Pavilion Shopping Centre promised to match their products with a wish-list from 20 charities yesterday, in a novel Mandela Day initiative by the city.

The match-making partnership between the Pavilion and eThekwini Municipality — which identified the 20 needy charities — began a three-day Mandela Week programme for the city, focusing on young children and the elderly.

One Umlazi crèche has already picked up the washing machine it needed for the children’s laundry, donated by an appliance store at the mall.

After the presentation at city hall yesterday, two dozen charity representatives spontaneously filled the city’s normally formal Exco chamber with beautiful prayer harmonies.

Mayor James Nxumalo said the charity had been devised to honour 20 years of freedom.

Justice Langa, a manager at the mall’s Woolworths branch, announced a major food donation to the elderly of Chesterville. Other city events marking Mandela Day include:

• a clean-up programme today in Clairwood;

• a tree-planting effort at King Dinizulu Park;

• a major “health and wellness” and meals day for more than 500 elderly in Chesterville;

• the hand-over of houses in Umlazi, where Premier Senzo Mchunu and Mayor Nxumalo will “spend 67 minutes honouring Madiba”;

• a mayoral hand-over of meals and nappies at Ifikile Home in Umbumbulu, and the painting of Mbomvu Primary School; and

• the hand-over of 1 000 school uniforms to orphans in Umlazi.
