Passion helps Ashley bag title

ASHLEY Plantimex are the PFA Over 35 League champions. This comes after a week that saw them clinch two matches which was good enough to bag the title.

Always the front runners this season, the title is rich reward for a team that has played attacking soccer, always looked for the win and represented the club with pride, passion and commitment.

First up was a meeting with Highway United, Ashley coming away with a 3-1 win. Ashley struck early when George Campbell’s great individual effort found the net, but Highway came back, finding their own goal to level proceedings at 1-1 going into half time.

Phil Skerritt, standing in as team manager, stirred the boys into action with his half-time speech, Ashley coming out with purpose for the second stanza. An early penalty for Ashley was buried by Elvis Govender and despite Highway pushing hard to equalise once more, Ashley controlled the defence and midfield with aplomb.

Hayden Vincent rounded off the emphatic win with his moment of brilliance, running through the defence to slam home and put the result beyond doubt.

This effort was enough to earn Vincent the man of the match award and going into the match against FC Burrough, Ashley needed one point to clinch the league.

Knowing it would be a hard game with Burrough fighting to the end, Ashley stuck to their tried and trusted gameplan, with their players once again coming to the fore.

Vincent continued his goal scoring spree, impressing this time with a spectacular free kick which found the back of the net.

The goal saw Burrough come back strongly and although they enjoyed most of the possession, Ashley’s defence stood firm. This resulted in Ashley ’keeper Eric Dladla having a relatively easy time between the posts with not much work to be done.

In the second half, Ashley wrapped up the match and title with Vincent adding his second from outside the box. Campbell added the third and the unstoppable Vincent grabbed his hat-trick when he converted a penalty.
