Pastor accused of rape says Jesus will represent him

2014-03-18 00:00

A LOCAL pastor on a rape charge has refused legal counsel in court, saying he “will be represented by Jesus”.

The well known Pietermaritzburg pastor, who cannot be named, came to the Pietermaritzburg regional court with his congregation and prayed before he appeared yesterday.

It is alleged that the 62-year-old pastor sodomised a 16-year-old boy in 2010 when the boys from his church had a sleepover at his house.

He was arrested in 2011. Later the case was provisionally withdrawn as the victim was still undergoing counselling.

The case was brought back to the court roll and he was summoned.

When he appeared in court yesterday he was told about his right to be represented but said he was not going to be represented by lawyers as Jesus is his lawyer.

State prosecutor Rene Padayachee said as he was faced with a serious case he might need one. The pastor was still not convinced that he will need a lawyer. He will be back in court on March 24.
