Pastor’s plot to kill rival backfires

A STANGER pastor will appear in the kwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court today on charges of conspiracy to commit murder, provincial police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said yesterday.

The 20-year-old pastor is alleged to have plotted to murder Pastor Sandile Msebeni of the same area after he failed to deliver a car that Msebeni had paid for in cash.

Msebeni said the suspect, whose congregation is adjacent to his, sold him the car for R7 500 last week. On Sunday he was to have taken delivery of the vehicle and the log book.

When he phoned the suspect he said he was in Durban and expected to be back yesterday.

“On Tuesday afternoon we went to pray in the mountain with my congregation and on our way back at about 9 pm I noticed two men following us.

One of the men approached him, said Msebeni. “He said he was hired to kill me by the suspect because I was stealing members of his church.”

Msebeni said he agreed to meet the hitman yesterday and reported the matter to the police.

The hitman was to have killed Msebeni for a fee of R3 000 and take his phone to the suspect as proof that the job had been done.

The police set up a sting operation yesterday in which the hitman would take the phone to the hardware store where the suspect works. Undercover police were present to monitor the transaction.

“On arrival at the store the suspect paid the hitman R500 after he saw my phone,” said Msebeni. ‘He instructed him to destroy it and that he should come back later for the remaining R2 500, and the police nabbed him.”
