Patrons put off by stench of garbage at Debi Market

2013-02-14 00:00

THE Debi Market in Northdale has become a haven for rats, maggots and flies as uncollected refuse piles up.

The stench of rotting fruit and vegetables greets market patrons from a distance, and local vendors say the situation is not good for business.

Simphiwe Magadla, a food vendor whose stall is less than 50 metres from the now overflowing garbage skip said: “This is bad for business because our customers cannot buy food from us simply because we are too close to this terrible stench.”

Magadla said it was not only bad for business, but the refuse also posed a health hazard.

“The municipal staff only clear the skip, but the rubbish that piles up around the skip is left uncollected, which attracts flies, maggots and rats,” he said.

Magadla said the municipality should consider providing two skips because it was evident that one was insufficient for an area as big as the market.

Another trader, who did not want to be named, said he failed to understand why the municipal staff waited for dirt to accumulate instead of removing it regularly. “This situation keeps our customers away,” he said.

Msunduzi Municipality spokesperson Brian Zuma said they would engage with the environmental department to visit the area and compile a report on the matter.

The findings of the report would be used to come up with a solution to the problem.
