Patrons uneasy over Liberty mall’s new parking system

2013-02-19 00:00

LIBERTY Midlands Mall has recently ditched parking lot tickets in favour of a press-button boom system for access to the centre’s parking facilities.

The change has left some shoppers uneasy. They fear their cars might not be safe because tickets are no longer needed to exit the parking lot.

Said centre manager Umi Khan: “The centre recognised that traffic flows in and out of the centre can be problematic at times and undertook to implement measures to improve this.”

Khan said the centre management found the push-button system most suitable when reviewing the options available.

Security guards patrolled the parking bays, and with the mall’s state-of-the-art security systems, “this goes a long way to deterring criminals from frequenting the centre”, said Khan.

It was the mall’s aim to provide a convenient, safe and secure shopping experience for all visitors to the centre.

Dr Johan Burger, of the Institute for Security Studies, said he didn’t see any value in the new system.

“Anybody can press a button and get in. There’s very little control,” he said, adding that there was greater control with the issuing of tickets.

Gary Ronald, spokesperson for the Automobile Association, said he was in favour of a system that kept a watchful eye over what happens in a car park.

“As long as the CCTV is monitored carefully, I don’t think that having a ticket or not will prevent cars from being stolen. There’s always a way.”

Ronald said some car guards worked with criminals when shoppers were under the impression that their cars were being looked after.
