Peace: Dalai Lama receives Gandhi award

2012-01-07 00:00

The Durban-based peace activist Ela Gandhi presented the Dalai Lama with the Gandhi International Peace Award at the international gathering of Buddhists in India this week. The Mahatma Gandhi International Award for Peace and Reconciliation (MAGI Awards) was created in memory of Mahatma Gandhi, who began his socio-political life in South Africa and struggled for justice and for peace and reconciliation. It was created in 2003 to mark the centenary of a newspaper, Indian Opinion, published in South Africa by Mahatma Gandhi. The Dalai Lama was invited to Durban to receive the award from the Gandhi Development Trust in Durban last year, but his visa was declined and he was not able to attend. Former recipients of the award include Nelson Mandela, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, Coretta Scott King and Burma’s pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
