Peace march: ANC calls for an end to tensions

2009-07-08 00:00

ANC members in Greytown yesterday marched through the streets of the town calling for the Justice Department to restore peace in the area following political tensions between the party and the IFP.

The tensions have resulted in three councillors, two from the IFP and one from the ANC, being killed in the space of a month. An ANC family, including a four-year child, were also killed in the same period.

The ANC chairman in the Inkosi Bhambatha region and an Umvoti Municipality councillor, Philani Mavundla, said the reason for the march was to make the Justice Department aware that the ANC in the area is fed up with the recent spate of violence.

Mavundla said that in the past two weeks, 17 firearms were discovered and confiscated and called on the police to uncover more firearms.

He said the ANC is calling on the department to arrest people suspected to be linked to the killings.

Mavundla added that the march proceeded without hindrances.
