Penn pops into Durbs

2014-10-08 00:00

AWARD-WINNING Hollywood star Sean Penn tried to conceal his identity by wearing baggy clothes and hiding under a cap during his low-key stay in Durban.

The 54-year-old I Am Sam movie star sneaked into Durban’s Oyster Box Hotel in uMhlanga for one day last week hoping to go unrecognised, but a source confirmed that Penn was spotted at the five-star hotel.

General manager at the Oyster Box, Wayne Coetzer, would not confirm this.

Penn has spent most of the year in the country working on his latest movie, The Last Face.

In October, he and South African-born Hollywood star Charlize Theron (39), were spotted together working on the movie.

Penn is directing the love story, which is set to be released next year.

Spanish actor Javier Bardem also stars in the movie, currently being shot at various locations in South Africa.

Earlier this year, City Press reported that Penn was spotted at Dias Tavern in Cape Town. Unlike his low-key stay in Durban, apparently the award-winning actor turned heads as he sat and ate.

American entertainment website E! Entertainment reported that the couple were spotted during a shooting on a busy Cape Town street with several crew members and a slew of extras on standby.

The source told The Witness that Penn checked in under a false name, something he does regularly when he visits the hotel.

She said: “He was here for a brief visit.

“He checks in with a pseudonym every time and when he is here, he always wears baggy clothes and a cap so that people don’t see him.”

Although he is a regular guest at the hotel, Penn is said to fly under the radar when he is in Durban.

“He is really low-key. He stayed in his room the whole time because he doesn’t look for attention. He likes to go undetected. Even the last time he was here, he was very quiet. He is not demanding at all,” said the source.

Another source who spotted Penn said he checked into a standard sea-facing room which goes for R3 800 a night.

The most expensive room at the hotel is the presidential suite which goes for R50 000 per night.

He said: “[Penn and Theron] are making a movie together … They are never what they seem. He is very nice and she, on the other hand, takes herself very seriously.

“Apparently she always wants directors to give her her space and they let her have her say. Apparently she gives him a hard time,” the source said.
