SIYANDA Goodwill Cele (24) and Lungisani Sbonelo Ndwalane (26) from Amandawe have been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for robbery and theft in the Scottburgh regional court on Tuesday.

The men were arrested for the 2009 robbery at a holiday cottage in Pennington.

A family of 14 people including seven children from Pietermaritzburg was holidaying in Pennington in December 2009 when the robbery took place. At around 11 pm on December 29, they were attacked and robbed by three balaclava-clad men.

The attackers entered through the rear door leading into the lounge.

According to the police report one attacker was armed with a home-made revolver while the other two were armed with knives.

The victims were herded into the adjacent garage where they were robbed of cameras, cellphones, jewellery, wallets and handbags.

A neighbouring family also on holiday noticed the scene and realised that something was amiss.

Two men approached the house to investigate and the attackers turned on them and fired. The neighbour returned fire killing one instantly and wounding another in the back.

The third man attacked a 71-year-old pensioner with a knife.

The man fought back, disarmed and stabbed him with the same knife in the back.

Cele and Ndwalane were convicted on three counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances and two of theft. They will concurrently serve a two-year sentence for theft along with their 15-year sentences.
