Permanent head named for agriculture dept

2010-04-05 00:00

THE KwaZulu-Natal Agriculture, Environmental Affairs and Rural Development Department has a new permanent head after years of being run by a number of acting heads.

Dr Sizwe Mkhize, born in Swayimani near Wartburg, has started his duties in the hot seat of the department, which has become known for financial mismanagement, maladminstration and adverse audit reports.

Departmental spokeswoman Ncumisa Mafunda told The Witness that Mkhize is an agriculturalist who has worked for the government since 1994.

Mkhize has specialised in crop production and irrigation and has a B.Sc in agriculture from the University of Fort Hare, a masters in agriculture from the University of Pennsylvania, and a Ph.D in agriculture from the University of Pretoria.

He worked for the national Water Affairs Department before taking up his new appointment.

According to Mafunda, Mkhize’s vision is “to build a strong team of cadres who will bring about the realisation of government’s goals, particularly in agriculture”.

Agriculture, Environmental Affairs and Rural Development MEC Lydia Johnson said Mkhize has the qualifications and expertise to make a success of the job, and she hopes he will strengthen the stabilisation of the department.
