Petition: School therapists want their 2009 raise

2012-08-15 00:00

SCHOOL therapists in KwaZulu-Natal have signed a petition signalling their frustration about the Basic Education Department’s delay in honouring their entitlement to the occupation-specific dispensation (OSD).

The National Professional Teachers’ Organisation of South Africa (Naptosa) said that in 2009 teachers across the country received two salary adjustments, one being the annual adjustment and the other a specific dispensation of between three and seven percent.

“The school therapists were left out of the equation with the promise that once the health sector had determined the OSD for therapists in the health sector, the same would apply to therapists in the education sector,” said the KZN chief executive of Naptosa, Anthony Pierce.

“Three years have passed since and there’s no adjustment in sight.”

Naptosa said health sector employees received their adjustment in 2010. School therapists contend that they earn about R38 000 less than a new entrant into the health sector.

Pierce said threats of resignation were real, and if the state did not move on this issue, special schools would suffer most as teachers leave for the “attractive pound and dollar”.

KZN Education Department spokesperson Sihle Mlotshwa said the issue would be dealt with once the petition was received in its offices.
