Petrol: Pain at the pump

2013-03-06 00:00

ACCORDING to the latest Bloomberg Gas Price Ranking, which sorts 60 countries by average price at the pump and “pain at the pump”, South Africa ranks number 41 and 11 respectively.

The ranking measures the percentage of average daily income needed to buy a gallon of fuel. Although it puts South Africa’s petrol among the world’s cheapest, the pain index shows the price hurts consumers in their pockets.

“South Africans do face pain at the pump, the 11th most overall, which is made worse by the amount they consume,” the report said.

With low per capita incomes and moderate petrol use, South Africans are second only to Greeks in the share of their pay cheques that goes to filling up: 4.1%.

One way of easing the burden is through a portal known as, now used by over 6 600 South Africans. The portal helps individuals find others travelling their way.

FindaLift also works with organisations, universities and other defined communities to implement private lift-sharing programmes.
