Pets and their owners bothered by noisy New Year fireworks

FIREWORKS set off to herald in the New Year have once again raised the wrath of pet owners who spent their evening comforting terrified pets.

“Terrible. Our kitten was petrified,” one owner wrote on The Witness Facebook page yesterday in a thread about the New Year ­fireworks.

Many people in the city commented how the fireworks had not only terrified their pets, but even themselves.

Pietermaritzburg SPCA clinic nurse Debbie Cornish said she could not provide details as they were closed yesterday, but it was normal for the SPCA to receive a greater number of lost and terrified animals this time of the year due to firecrackers.

Adi Olivier wrote on Facebook that Chase Valley was noisy with some big bangs, “which was nerve-wracking for both me and my animals as well as the birds in my garden.

“I believe Scottsville, Prestbury and Pelham were horrendous. I wish people would keep to the designated times and stick to the pretty lights rather than let off ‘bombs’.”

Elize Nel wrote that in spite of the rain, “the fireworks was so loud, my poor dogs were so traumatised by the inconsiderate [people] enjoying their fireworks. This is unacceptable.

“Our little dog went missing due to the fireworks.

“They are so unnecessary,” said Ash van der Merwe.

Maria Schultz said the fireworks in Chase Valley stopped before 12.30 am, “but were extremely loud and plentiful”.
