Phaku, Challenor dominate senior races in cross-country league

2011-03-15 00:00

THUBALETHU Phaku and Jenna Challenor were the runaway victors in the senior races in the first cross-country league of the year hosted by the Queensburgh club for the first time since the 1980s.

Phaku, who has been the province’s leading short-distance performer for the past five years, won the 12 km in 36mins 15secs, over two minutes clear of the rest of the field, with triathlete Claude Eksteen the best of the rest in 38:22.

It was the same story for Challenor who also had two minutes in hand over Cary Ann Smith from the Nedbank Club, who finished in 32:38 to Challenors 30:56.

Although the world cross-country is being held next weekend, in South Africa this is the beginning of the build-up to the 2012 championships.

Peter Mavura of the Bluff Meats Formula One club was in a class of his own in the Verulam Gaterite marathon on Sunday, taking line honours in the relatively fast time of 2hrs:35mins.

Mavura was eight minutes and over two kilometres clear of his nearsest competition, Thule Bonarezi, from the Boxer club, with Thembinkosi Gumede putting a second Boxer vest on to the podium.

Mavura and Gumede added gold and silver spot in the 35-39 age category to their spoils for the day.

In the women’s race it was Melanie van Rooyen who put the gold-class performance together, and a 3:06 on this course is certainly equivalent to another sub-three-hour effort.

Almost four kilometres adrift was visting runner Davera Magson from Eastern Province whose 3:21 time was over 30 minutes clear of Janine Bissett of the newly named Riverside Harriers. This club has evolved from the new Riverside Sports Ground and replaces the old Glenwood Harriers committee.

A number of the women who ran the cross-country on Saturday opted for another outing on Sunday morning with Cary Ann Smith having to settle for second behind Boxers’ Janine Carey in the half-marathon and Jenna Challenor adding the 10 km title to her cross-country win.

Runners looking to run The Old Mutual Two Oceans 56 km race are reminded that entries close tomorrow. With 14 000 runners in the half marathon and over 6 500 in the 56 km at the end of last week, this is going to be a record field overall. Entries only open until tomorrow on
