Philharmonic orchestra enchants pupils at city schools

YOU could have heard a pin drop at Sukuma Comprehensive School yesterday when the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra (KZNPO) began playing.

The orchestra was visiting the Pietermaritzburg school as part of its outreach and education programme in the province. After performing for the 1 250 pupils from Sukuma, the musicians answered questions fired at them from the pupils, before doing a second performance for 1 200 pupils from Mehlokazulu Secondary School.

The KZNPO will perform a community concert at 7 pm tonight at Haythorne Secondary, Woodlands.

Tomorrow sees the orchestra performing for 520 pupils from Russell Junior Primary, 350 pupils from Khwezi Primary, and 900 pupils from Sobantu High School. And on Friday, a second community concert takes place at 7 pm in the Sukuma Comprehensive School hall.

Nompilo Mtshali, from the orchestra’s marketing department, said one of the main reactions they have to their school visits is amazement that the orchestra is so versatile. “The pupils usually think that the orchestra only performs classical pieces and are delighted to learn that they can play songs they know,” she added.

After yesterday’s shows, several pupils expressed an interest in joining the orchestra. The orchestra offers a tuition service for talented youngsters. To inquire, phone 031 369 9438.
