Phishing: Two held in Pretoria

2013-05-10 00:00

THE police, in co-operation with MTN, have arrested two men in Centurion near Pretoria in connection with recent SIM swopping and Internet fraud.

Spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Katlego Mogale said police from Wierdabrug swooped on the premises on Wednesday after an intensive investigation with MTN forensic experts and arrested two men.

The two South Africans, aged 27 and 31, allegedly used the premises to make SIM swops and transfer money from accounts via the Internet. Cellphones and laptops were seized.

The criminals get their victims to unwittingly reveal their PIN numbers, account numbers and banking passwords, by means of “phishing” e-mail and SMS messages. Then a SIM swop is performed on the victim’s cellphone number so that the SMS the bank sends with an authorisation code during an Internet transaction goes to the criminals, who then transfer large sums from victims’ accounts.
