Phoenix child rapist gets 39 years

WOMEN’s Month saw a victory against a Phoenix man who has been sentenced to 39 years’ imprisonment on two counts of rape, grievous bodily harm, intimidation and contravening a protection order.

The 32-year-old, whose identity is known to The Witness but is being withheld to protect the children involved, was convicted last week at the Verulam Magistrate’s Court of crimes dating as far back as 2005.

The accused first raped his two stepdaughters, aged five and eight, six years ago.

In fear of her life and that he would kill her girls, his wife withdrew the case.

But last year, he again raped his step-daughter, now aged 13, as her 10-year old sister was made to watch.

The accused was also extremely physically abusive according to investigating officer Detective Constable T.B. Mtwana.

“The family will now be at peace knowing that the abuser is behind bars probably until he is old and frail,” he said.

Acting station commander at Phoenix police station Colonel T.A. Mabaso expressed appreciation to Mtwana for a job well done.

“This is a good example signalling to suspects that the law will always defend the vulnerable, especially society’s women and children,” he said.
