2011-06-06 00:00

SIX people died in the early hours of yesterday morning in a head-on collision between a VW Polo and a minibus taxi on the N2 between Phongolo (in northern KZN) and Piet Retief.

According to the Transport Department, the collision took place on Sivele Bridge on the N2.

Five people died on the scene, while one person died in hospital.

Three of the occupants who died were travelling in the minibus taxi while the other three were occupants of the VW Polo.

The department said that five occupants, who were critically injured in the collision, were taken to Itshelejuba Hospital in northern KZN.

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu expressed his shock and sadness over the incident. “We are very concerned with the number of accidents and fatalities experienced by our province recently.

“This accident happens as we are still mourning the tragic death of six students in Durban last week,” added Mchunu.
