Pienaar signs one-year deal with TopTV

2010-05-04 00:00

STEVEN Pienaar’s local and international fans will be happy to hear that he has signed a one-year endorsement contract with TopTV.

Pienaar’s endorsement deal was disclosed after TopTV, the newest player in pay television in South Africa, was launched on May 1. TopTV is owned by On Digital Media.

Known as Schillo to his fans, Pienaar is one of the stars of Bafana Bafana and plays for Everton FC in the UK.

He has had a cracker of a season and is up for the prestigious Everton Player of the Year award.

If he keeps up this form and stays injury-free, he will no doubt give hope to millions of South African supporters.

Surprisingly, Pienaar had no sponsorship or representation in South Africa other than Adidas, so when he was approached in early 2010 by Elouise Kelly, chief marketing officer for TopTV, “Schillo jumped at the opportunity to be an ambassador for TopTV”.

The deal was signed in under a month, with the Everton midfielder sealing a one-year partnership.

Kelly said Pienaar is a “positive role model in our soccer-loving country. For us, Steven keeps it local, while adding some international flavour.”

TopTV arranged an advertisement shoot with Pienaar in Liverpool, and Ivan Johnson, executive creative director of ad agency Network BDDO Cape Town, said he was amazed to see how respected the football star is.

Even Everton’s fierce local rivals want his autograph, said Johnson.
